POWERWILL / BUYING GUIDE

Start with the job.
Choose with confidence.

A practical guide to access, cable reach, locating and recording — organized around the work you need to do.

BEFORE YOU COMPARE MODELS

Three checks that decide tool fit.

01

Confirm the entry point

Find an accessible cleanout or open pipe. Check the opening, camera head and rigid section; pipe diameter alone does not prove bend clearance.

02

Measure the route

Estimate the section from the access point. Bends, deposits and pipe condition can reduce how far a cable can be pushed.

03

Define the evidence

Choose visual recording, distance references and surface locating according to what the job needs to deliver.

CHOOSE BY SCENARIO

What are you inspecting?

Already know your specs? Use filters ↗
01

Recurring household drain problems

A drain backs up again after cleaning. You want a visual check before deciding what to do next.

How to choose

Start with an accessible cleanout and measure the route. For a shorter residential section, compare a 20–30 m configuration; consider 50 m only when the route needs it.

Features worth prioritizing

Prioritize access fit and clear recording. Add a receiver only if you need to locate the head from the surface.

Know the limit. A camera inspects; it does not clear the blockage. Do not force the head through a sink trap or toilet.

02

Home inspection & buyer reports

You need footage that explains visible drain conditions before a property decision.

How to choose

Choose a cable length that covers the accessible section. A level image and saved recordings help communicate findings; review how distance is documented.

Features worth prioritizing

PW9D1 uses cable markings. PW9DA includes a distance counter on its 165 ft / 50 m system; PW9D2 offers counter-equipped variants across more cable lengths.

Know the limit. Footage records what is visible. An inaccessible or submerged section is not a verified clear pipe.

03

Diagnose, locate & explain repairs

You need to show a customer where a visible defect is and document the inspection.

How to choose

Match the reel to the route, then select locating and distance recording. For a larger viewing area and keyboard, compare the 10-inch models.

Features worth prioritizing

Select a variant explicitly including the 512Hz locator receiver. PW9DA includes the sonde in both configurations, but the L512R01 receiver is included only in the locator bundle. PW9D2 distance-counter options must be chosen separately.

Know the limit. A counter estimates cable deployment; it is not an underground locator. Confirm locating conditions on site.

04

Property maintenance & repeat checks

Several units report problems, or your team needs before-and-after cleaning records.

How to choose

Compare 30–50 m configurations for the known route, then step up only if the line is longer. Record the access point, date and direction with each clip.

Features worth prioritizing

Prioritize repeatable recording and distance references. A shared receiver may suit a team that already owns a compatible one.

Know the limit. A recording helps maintenance handoffs; it does not by itself establish who caused a blockage.

05

Long private lines & site drainage

The accessible section extends beyond a typical short residential run.

How to choose

Compare 60–70 m PW9D2, 60–75 m 10-inch models, or 60–90 m PW7GY configurations. Check bends and retrieval access before choosing the longest reel.

Features worth prioritizing

Prioritize cable handling, a distance counter and locating when the route is unknown.

Know the limit. Cable length is not guaranteed reach. A push camera does not replace a municipal crawler survey or a complete septic-system inspection.

06

Elevated areas & close-up cavities

The target is a roof edge, ceiling access point or nearby cavity rather than a buried drain run.

How to choose

Use a pole camera for an elevated line of sight. Compare rotating dual-camera tools for forward and side views through an accessible opening.

Features worth prioritizing

PWM07: 3 m telescopic pole with pan and tilt. PWM702: 5–10 m cable. PW7DH2: 20–30 m cable.

Know the limit. These are different tool formats. Confirm opening size and access conditions before choosing one for a cavity.

CONFIGURATION AT A GLANCE

Compare the details that change the decision.

Starting prices are for the lowest-priced listed configuration. Longer cables, counters and receiver bundles can cost more.

COMMON BUYING QUESTIONS

Resolve the questions before you order.

Do I need a 512Hz locator receiver?

Choose a receiver bundle when you need to find the camera head from the surface. A sonde in the camera head transmits; the handheld receiver detects that signal. A kit without the receiver cannot perform that workflow on its own.

Will a smaller camera pass every bend?

No. Head diameter, rigid head length, bend geometry and pipe condition all matter. If your only access is a sink trap, toilet or tight fixture opening, confirm a suitable access route before choosing a push camera.

Will the camera clear a clog?

No. It provides visual information. Debris and standing water may obscure the view; cleaning and camera inspection are separate tasks.

Should I always choose the longest cable?

Choose for the route and handling needs. More cable does not guarantee more usable reach through bends or damaged pipe. For a one-time check with uncertain access, consider arranging a professional inspection before buying.

Is a distance counter the same as locating?

No. Cable markings or an electronic counter provide a distance reference along the deployed cable. A receiver detects a compatible sonde signal from the surface.

What should I save for a maintenance or inspection report?

Keep the date, access point, direction, selected distance reference and original footage. Note uninspected sections and visibility limits so the next person can interpret the record.
